Notes on “The Intention of the Device” Single-channel Video, Silent, 2009

The Yale Museum in New Haven, Connecticut, houses an extensive collection of African Art and religious artifacts.  Standing out in the otherwise gothic setting, it is built with brick, concrete, glass and steel, but it’s most distinctive feature is inside.  The ceiling, fashioned from concrete tetrahedral slabs inspired by buckminster fuller, forms a pattern of triangles hovering over large open galleries.

This video is a document of both the space and objects housed within, made by suspending a mirrored mobile from the ceiling and recording the reflections without any further intervention. The masked figures populating the space, divorced from their intended cultural function and symbolic meaning, are both protagonist and witness, suspended in a point in history.
